Kilcornan Market Garden

My name is Laura McMorrow and I started Kilcornan Market Garden.

My husband Padraig and I moved back from Canada in 2021, with our little girl, and bought an old farmhouse in West Limerick. While renovating the house, we put up our first polytunnel, built raised beds and began growing food for our family. It quickly developed into a micro business supplying salads and vegetables to family, friends and the local community. We are now a family of 5 and Kilcornan Market Garden has continued to grow alongside us. We are ready to supply more of our produce beyond our locality, while remaining true to our core values.

Everything on our farm is sown, planted, picked and packed by hand, to ensure the highest quality standards. We harvest leaves early in the morning for peak freshness, for packing on site and delivery to stores. We focus on mixed salad, containing 7-8 different leaves, which change with the seasons. Alongside those, we grow Spinach, Rocket and a variety of other vegetables.

While not currently certified organic, this is a standard we aim to achieve over the coming years. Our practices use no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. We work to improve the health of the soil using green manure plants, crop rotations and compost, to produce the most vibrant, tastiest leaves. Alongside salads we have planted an orchard of 500 apple trees and one hectare of native trees. Shelter belts and hedgerows are being restored. We are also currently developing a 5 year Farm Plan with the National Parks & Wildlife Service to enhance biodiversity and important habitats. Farming with and for nature is an integral part of our ethos, we strive to protect and improve our environment for generations to come.

The Supervalu Food Academy provided the platform and training we needed to start supplying to a large retailer. The program champions quality, local, Irish food and the people who produce it. We are proud to be part of the Food Academy, and look forward to meeting and supplying the customers who support and value these qualities.
